The given sentence seeks to enumerate four effects of the New Ethics policy. You should therefore examine it first for a possible lack of parallelism in structure. The two non-underlined effects are mentioned as “a flurry”
and “a decline.” So, the absence of the article “a” (or an or the) in relation to the first
effect is an error of lack of parallelism in the sentence.

In the phrase “an increasing of government spending and increasing threats of
bureaucracy,” The gerund “increasing” covers both government spending and
threats of bureaucracy. So, this phrase must be deemed to represent only one
effect (and not two) of the New Ethics policy, and its description is in perfect

parallelism with the manner in which the other two effects are stated later. So, (B)

This question is all fine and ok; But Feruz77, you posted the problem at 4.50 P.M and you also gave the solution at 4.52 P.M. What are we supposed to do now? Since you are the originator, we all understand that you should be knowing the OA and OE, but the point is to make others see the nuance behind the llism in the issue. I will even suggest that we do not reveal the OA until four of five people have had a go at it. This is just a small suggestion.

C out cos of 'along with' - no need
B - 'and' is best.

Dont u think that after "to" , we have to use "increase" and not the "ing" form ..

D and E eliminated because of 'being'.

A eliminated because of the usage of As well as. Can use and instead.

I feel C changes the meaning. There is an increase in government spending but no mention of an increase in threat of .......

B is the correct. Parallel because
an increasing of ........ and (an increasing of) ..............

I was stuck between B and C.

Original sentence states that there are an increasing government spending and an increasing threat of bureaucracy.
(B) an increasing of government spending and the threat of bureaucracy - clearly states that both government spending and threat are increasing.
(C) an increasing of government spending along with the threat of bureaucracy - merely states that government spending is increasing but not the threat of bureaucracy.

An increasing of X and Y, a flurry of new employees, and a decline in productivity.

Now my question is how how a flurry of new employees, and a decline in productivity is parallel to X and Y? Also, do the phrase- a flurry of new employees, and a decline in productivity modify an increasing of X and Y.

I don't agree with the OA. The OA should be "C". The original sentence uses "as well as" --> This means that the stress is not on the threat of bureaucracy. Option B and C are both grammatically correct, so option C should be the correct answer since "along with" duplicates "as well as".

Hi, can you kindly explain me the structure in option B? To me C looks correct both grammatically and meaning-wise. I am having a hard time to understand how B is even grammatically correct?

Hi Sunny,

The question states that ethics policy will lead to:
1. increasing government spending, as well as increasing the threat of bureaucracy,
2. a flurry of new employees,
3. a decline in productivity.

The options should be parallel to each other. Since 2 and 3 have an article at their beginning, 1 should also have an article at its beginning.
So only option B and C qualify as the contenders, since they both use "an".

B changes the meaning of the original sentence. So I am not quiet sure as to why the OA is B. It should be C.

Hope that helps.

Hello GMATNinja,

1. Is the usage of "increasing of" correct in this sentence? I am skeptical about this usage.
2. Shouldn't answer be C, since "along with" duplicates "as well as" - both concentrate on the first item in the list - and "and" changes the meaning entirely, concentrating equally on both the items in the list.

I assume the sentence has the structure X,Y, and Z. Here X= an increasing of government spending and the threat of bureaucracy Y= a flurry of new
employees Z=a decline in productivity.I Notice that there is a comma before Z(, and a decline). Here X ( an increasing of government spending and the threat of bureaucracy)is convoluted. Note that there is no comma before and (an increasing of government spending and the threat of bureaucracy).
