Answer is C. Correct idiom is not so much X as Y.
Also X & Y should be parallel. This helps in picking C rather than B.

Why C?
I would think "as much" would go with "as". To me, "so much" is another form of "that much". If you make this substitution in the sentence, D does not sound wrong. Use of "because" twice does not seem appropriate either.
I would say, D.

D is definitely wrong because it changes meaning by using through

I was not aware of the idiom not so much X as Y

I ended up choosing A based on not X but Y.

Looks like I got it wrong.
