Because his father was killed by the British army during the Seven Years' War, Marquis de Lafayette had been motivated to seek revenge against Great Britain even before the American Revolution broke out in 1775, a personal history combining with his love for adventure to lead him to move to America and serve in the colonial army without pay when the war began.

(A) a personal history combining with his love for adventure to lead
(B) a personal history, when combined with his love for adventure, that led
(C) a personal history that combined with his love for adventure, and it led
(D) and this personal history, which combined with his love for adventure to lead
(E) and this personal history, combined with his love for adventure, led

I would go with E;

A – Not parallel - combining should be matched with a rhyming leading rather than “to lead” or it should be “a personal history combining with his love for adventure that led” in order to serve as an absolute modifier. Thirdly, a past participle “combined with” will be a better fit than the present participle” combining with

B. The use of “when combined” makes it conditional, customary and even compulsory

C. the use of it is redundant – It should be “a personal history that combined with his love for adventure, and (that) led “

D. is a fragment

E. uses a balanced second clause

Here is the solution...question updated with OA.

Choice E corrects the verb tense and idiomatic errors without introducing additional errors. This personal history...led him to move... is in the past tense. The modifying clause combined with his love for adventure idiomatically describes this personal history. The second clause, which is independent, is grammatically attached to the first with a comma and the coordinating conjunction and.

there are two independent clause correctly connected by and in option E. A, B and C has modifier error, and D is fragment
