yah sorry can't really help much but to say that "made up for" just sounds right to my ear. although i don't really see an issue with B, i'll still pick D because of the proposition "for"

also, to note... i think D maintains the paralleism by comparing:
whatever (a pronoun) he lacked was made up for by the passion (a noun)

as oppose to B:
what he lacked (a clause) was made up [for] by the passion (a noun).
