Students took a test and received either A’s, B’s, C’s, D’s, or F’s. If 30% of the class got A’s or B’s, and 50% got C’s or D’s, how many students got F’s?

(1) 10 students received B’s.
(2) There was a total of 40 students in the class.

30+50=80% of the students got A, B, C or D.
Therefore 100-80=20% of the students got an F.

Question: What is the number of students who got F? OR What is the total number of students?

1. Not Sufficient
30% of the students for a A or a B. But we do not know exactly how many got only B.
If 10 got only B, we cant say that these 10 were the 30% of the class because that 30% included the ones who had an A.

2. Sufficient
20% of the population of students (=40) gives us the answer.

We are given information about 30% of the class got A’s or B’s, and 50% got C’s or D’s which in total are 80 % of total students
we need to find how many students got F's
in order to find a solution we just need to know the total number of students
Statement 1 gives us number of students who got B's clearly insufficient
Statement 2 tells us the the total number of students in class
20% of 40 = 8 students got F's
Correct answer - B
