Studies have shown that a large percentage of car accidents are caused by aggressive driving. To help reduce the number of accidents and to promote traffic safety in general, insurance companies have begun to issue discounts to drivers who take defensive driving courses. Research shows that people who practice defensive driving are considerably less likely to get into a car accident. Therefore, the insurance company’s plan should help reduce the number of accidents.

Assuming the statements above are true, which of the following can be inferred from them?

A. The majority of accidents are caused by drivers who possess insurance.
B. People who manage to consistently avoid car accidents are likely practicing defensive driving.
C. Young males and other demographics known for disproportionately being involved in car accidents are less likely to practice defensive driving than other demographics.
D. An individual who does not practice defensive driving is always more likely to get into a car accident than an individual who does practice defensive driving.
E. Discounts are the most effective way for insurance companies to promote defensive driving.

This argument contains a conditional statement. If people are less likely to get into a car accident, they are more likely practicing defensive driving. The contrapositive of that is if people are less likely practicing defensive driving, they are more likely to get into a car accident. So answer C is the correct one.

Can somebody explain these - contrapositive & converse?

egmat - could you please help me out with this? I had chosen D but now I understand that it is wrong because individuals who do not practice defensive driving might be practicing something else and hence might not be more likely to get into accidents. However, I am unable to understand why C is correct. Thanks in advance!

Could somebody please help why C and not D?
I've gone through the posts, but the solution is confusing.

Hi,

Though i chose B, i realize it is mistake.

I tried to come up with own reasoning.

Premise: Research shows that people who practice defensive driving are considerably less likely to get into a car accident

people who practice defensive driving (A) -> Less likely to get into car accident (B)

ContraPositive: ~B -> ~A => More likely to get into car accident (~B) -> Less like to practice driving (~A)
Reverse: B -> A : Less likely to get into car accident -> More likely to practice defensive driving
but reverse need not be true always ,i.e if A -> B, if B Need not be A

A. The majority of accidents are caused by drivers who possess insurance. - Neet not be true, people who dont possess insurance could be many causing accidents, maybe they will get attracted to the discount and learn defence driving.

B. People who manage to consistently avoid car accidents are likely practicing defensive driving.
Less likely to get into card accident (B) -> more likely to practice defensive driving(A)
This is the reverse (marked in blue), which have shown it above, need not be true

C. Young males and other demographics known for disproportionately being involved in car accidents are less likely to practice defensive driving than other demographics.
Young males more likely to involve in accident (~B) -> less likely to practice defensive driving (~A)
This is exact contra positive we discussed above, which is always true. - Hence correct answer

D. An individual who does not practice defensive driving is always more likely to get into a car accident than an individual who does practice defensive driving.
- This is need not be true always, a person who has take defensive driving lessons can get into accidents and a more skilled driver who has not taken defensive driving lessons can avoid accidents

E. Discounts are the most effective way for insurance companies to promote defensive driving.
- Discount may be one of the most effective ways, not only one, as there could be some other ways

Hence C
