Hi
Your transcription seems to be different from the other earlier versions. Even D seems to be way apart from your version. Could you kindly look into that?
But as such, we can remember two things. The first is that the reason and due to ( for that matter also "because" or "because of", if there are such choices) are redundant. Second and less notably, the gerund 'sacrificing' is inferior to the standard noun sacrifice.

INCORRECT... not only due to...but also... we need "due to" after but also to maintain parallelism

B. The defeat of the Spanish Armada, which stymied the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders, was not only due to gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrifice
INCORRECT... not only due to...but also... we need "due to" after but also to maintain parallelism

D. Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders, the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing
INCORRECT... stymieing should modify the defeat, not the reason.

E. Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders, the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice
CORRECT

Maybe this can also be a reason to reject D: as per manhattan, action nouns and complex gerund can be parallel. In D we have 'gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing ' - concrete noun and complex gerund.
Also, in my opinion ' gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing ' does sound weird.

E confused me because I've heard of expresion: I was due to do something, when...
I had this expression in my mind when evaluating E

Complicated wording, but in fact a rather easy question.

First split: not only X, but also Y
A, B and C out

Between D and E
D. Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders. the reason for the defeat of the Spanish Armada was not only gale winds that favored the British but also the sacrificing
Issues
- Stymieing the Armada's plans is modifying the reason - Wrong
- gale winds is not parallel with the sacrificing.
Action noun || complex gerund - OK
Simple noun || complex gerund - Not OK

D Out

E. Stymieing the Armada's plans to meet up with the Duke of Parma's army off the coast of Flanders. the defeat of the Spanish Armada was due not only to gale winds that favored the British but also to the sacrifice - Correct
