Susan has been collecting unemployment compensation for a long time. She always applies for jobs that require more education than she has—and is always turned down. She tells her friends, “There aren’t any jobs for me."

What is the error in Susan’s reasoning?

(A) she hasn’t gone to a job guidance center
(B) assuming what it seeks to establish
(C) assuming that she only has two choices
(D) equating the actual and the possible
(E) confusing coincidence with a relationship

What are the two choices she believes she has? I selected D as I felt that she was equating the jobs actually meant for her as those which are possible for her - so what is the error in my reasoning? Thank you for your reply!

The argument commits the fallacy of false dichotomy. It assumes that Susan has only two possibilities—a job that requires more education or no job. Clearly, there is a wide choice between these extremes. The answer is (C).

What is the error in Susan’s reasoning?
(A) she hasn’t gone to a job guidance centerOut of scope,no such discussion
(B) assuming what it seeks to establishNo such inference
(C) assuming that she only has two choices
