By showing that South Africa does not have a free market and is in fact a kind of collectivist welfare state for Whites only, Sowell argues that American conservatives have no valid ideological grounds to be in sympathy with the Pretoria regime.
(A) to be in sympathy with
(B) to sympathize with
(C) for sympathizing with
(D) that they should sympathize with
(E) that they should have sympathy for

Guys I am stuck with this question. My choice is B but the answer is C.

SC gurus plz explain. It is question 219 in 885SC material posted by bigB

Thanks

in normal condition I believe B is correct, but the trick here is that the sentence uses the word ARGUE and the correct idiom for this is ARGUE FOR. For that reason the answer is C.

I find Choice C extremly awkward and confusing. Correct me if I'm wrong but the structure here presupposes the following logic:

Sowell argues (what does he argue?) that American conservatives have no valid ideological grounds (what grounds do they not have?) to sympathize with the Pretoria regime. Thus B is the answer.
