(1) The difference between the temperatures on the Fahrenheit scale is 45°.

(2) The greater of the two temperatures is 30° on the Celsius scale

This is my first reply on GMATClub, so be gentle :D!

Well, my reasoning is

Assume case1 at celsius c1: C1 = 5/9(F1— 32)
and at celsius c2: C2 = 5/9(F2-32)

taking the difference between c1 and c2...

c1-c2 = 5/9 (f1-32) - 5/9 (f2-32)
c1-c2 = 5/9 (f1-f2)
c1-c2 = 5/9 (45)... through condition 1, which gives the difference in fahrenheit as 45

which gives you the difference in c1-c2.

Hence condition 1, is sufficient.

c=5/9F - (5/9)32
this is a linear equation. Which means that the difference between the value at celsius scale and fahrenheit scale will follow linear pattern (constant rate of growth). Thus, difference at one point is adequate for one to find out the difference in celsius scale. therefore, A is suff.

B merely gives a value. nothing can be predicted from it. Thus not suff.

To me, you dont need to do any algebra. The fomula will guarantee for one C there is one and only one F and vice versa. Therefore if we know F2-F1 = 45, you know you can get C2-C1.

And statement 2 does not provide enough information.

So the answer is A.

5/9*F1 - 32*5/9 - (5/9*F2-32*5/9)

5/9*F1 - 32*5/9 - 5/9*F2 + 32*5/9

5/9*F1 - 32*5/9 - 5/9*F2 + 32*5/9

5/9*F1 - 5/9*F2

5/9 (F1-F2)

You listed the question wrong. The formula is C = 5/9 (F-32).

Anyways,to me the answer for the above question is 'E' as we ned the exact values for both the temperatures and temperatures on Fahrenheit scale.

Please tell us the true OA against the above Question.

Also,if what you are advocating is true then yes 'A' is the OA since we will be needing just the value of the difference between the temperatures on Fahrenheit scale.
