Terry has some oranges. Out of that, 4% were thrown away, 80% of the remaining oranges were sold and he is now left with 96 oranges. What was the initial number of oranges with him?

A) 100
B) 200
C) 300
D) 350
E) 400

Brush up your skills. At the test center, you might mark a wrong answer for this question as well. Try to solve as accurately as possible within stipulated amount of time.

Assume total oranges = 100x
Oranges remaining after throwing away = 96x

80%sold of these sold.

Hence remaining oranges = 0.2*96x
Given, 0.2*96x = 96
Hence 0.2x = 1
x = 5

Total oranges = 500

I think you have copied the options incorrectly.

We can let n = the initial number of oranges.

Since 0.04n oranges were thrown away, he was left with 0.96n oranges. Furthermore, he sold 0.8(0.96n) = 0.768n oranges, and 96 oranges were left. Thus:

(# thrown away) + (# sold) + (# left over) = total number of oranges

0.04n + 0.768n + 96 = n

0.808n + 96 = n

96 = 0.192n

96/0.192 = n

500 = n

Answer: E

As I mentioned the ANSWER does not form part of choices..
4% were thrown away, so left 96%..
80% eaten , left 20% of 96% of Total...
20% of 96% of Total = 96.
\(\frac{20}{100}* \frac{96}{100} *T = 96............. T = 100*\frac{100}{20} = 500\)

chetan2u _ don't understand the second part- how did you get rid of 96/100 and where did the 100/20 come from?
