I have a question regarding Univ Of Texas Austin (McCombs MBA) and Carlson School of Business (Minnesota)

Which is a better school between two?

I saw employement stats of the two, for Carlson it is higher (Austin 60%, Carlson 82%)

Not very sure how I can differentiate two based on their courses offered.

The average salary offered at Carlson is higher than is offered at McCombs!

Both are good in Information Systems.

Still why Austin is ranked higher than Carlson why??

One more question is how assured an individual can be of the job after doind MBA from say top 30 schools??

Please don't get too hung up on the rankings. You can easily find ways in which the #10-ranked school is better than the #1-ranked school. A lot of applicants don't really listen this advice, but definitely do not base your decision on the rankings. We advise that people just use them as a starting point when trying to figure out what schools they might want to apply to. The rest of the research (and the final decision) is up to you.

To answer your other question, there are absolutely no guarantees in terms of getting a job after getting ou tof a top-30 school, especially in a slow economy. It really depends on you -- how string your background is, how well you research companies and make contacts within those companies, etc. -- more than anything. As school will help you in that its reputation helps and companies will come and recruit on campus, but the rest is up to you. I'd focus less on those "number of people employed" percentages and more on seeing the list of companies that recruit at the school. That's a good measure of what you job prospects might be in the field that you want to pursue.

Scott makes a number of good points about employment and rankings.

Even among the elite schools, in one recent year the median school experienced 25% unemployment at graduation.

As stated before, rankings can be a good starting point for research but are ill-suited as the sole source of information.

McCombs is in the transelite cluster of general reputation making it one of the 20 or so best schools in the US. However, its domain specific ranking can vary greatly from this general reputation. Carlson's general reputation is clearly lower but both schools are certainly respected.

What type of position are you seeking?

I have researched these issues (rankings and employment) extensively- feel from to send me a PM if you wish.
