I would choose E,

because of subject verb object and no unnecessary passive voice.

We need a singular noun so agree with the verb has.

out of all the choices only E has singular noun - the discovery
so E is the right choice.

(E) just reads like a standard textbook style sentence. The discovery of...has....

Should be E.

Based on the construction of the sentence, we can eliminated ACD
B does not agree with the rest of the sentence.
