The Acts of Trade and Navigation, passed by Parliament to protect British trade with their colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England, and that certain colonial exports be shipped only to England.

A .passed by Parliament to protect British trade with their colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England

SVA issue

B. which Parliament passed to protect its trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, all imports to the colonies come from England

Fragment because it uses which .Thge sentence is very awkward as the subject of the sentence is The acts but here in B it is parliament .

C. which Parliament passed to protect Britain’s trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies was carried on British ships, all imports to the colonies come from England

Wrong usage of required and again it is a fragment as discussed in B

D. passed by Parliament to protect Britain’s trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England,

Correct

E. which were passed by Parliament to protect British trade with its colonies, made it a requirement that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England

Wrong use of required as it is a bossy verb.

The answer is D which uses correct structure of command verb i.e command verb is followed by a bare infinitive.

Hi - for E, isnt "were" a problem ...

The Acts of Trade and Navigation --- isnt this singular ?

I think of this as a collective noun as its its most probably one charter with different points (acts) .... any thoughts on this being a singular noun and not a plural one, which will eliminate E ?

Also even if it was plural, E then has an issue with the green below

Hence E is a safe elimination

The Acts of Trade and Navigation, passed by Parliament to protect British trade with their colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England, and that certain colonial exports be shipped only to England.

The statement wrongly equates 'British trade' with 'colonies'. This is a big red flag. Notice that answers A,B and E all make the same mistake.

If you were like me, you would probably eliminate answer choices starting with 'which', because the product here- 'Acts of Trade and Navigation' has already been identified. Therefore, which is a nonessential clause containing additional, but not essential, information.

The notion that B, C, and E are rendered fragments because they use 'which' is erroneous.

1. Remove all the modifiers starting with 'which' until the comma after colonies. Bring the verb close to the subject. In all the three cases, the subject and verb are solidly available there (bolded words). Therefore, why would they be called fragments? Of course, there may be other errors in these choices, but they can't be dislodged as fragments in the least

The Acts of Trade and Navigation, passed by Parliament to protect British trade with their colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England, and that certain colonial exports be shipped only to England.

This is essentially a question of pronouns, the use of the command subjunctive and list parallelism. The three arms of the list are 1.that all trade is carried 2. that all imports come from, and 3. that certain colonial exports be shipped. Add to this the elements of 'that' parallelism, subject-verb or subject-verb number agreement, pronoun reference and V-A-N rule and you have a full-fledged practice question.

A .passed by Parliament to protect British trade with their colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England-- 'their' has no valid antecedent. The only plural noun is the 'acts', and acts cannot have colonies.

B. which Parliament passed to protect its trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, all imports to the colonies come from England -- 'its' refers to the parliament as if the parliament has colonies. -wrong

C. which Parliament passed to protect Britain’s trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies was carried on British ships, all imports to the colonies come from England --Subjunctive mood not maintained by using the verb 'was carried' 2. 'That' is missing from the second arm of the list.

D. passed by Parliament to protect Britain’s trade with its colonies, required that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England,-- the best with no pronoun, parallelism or subjunctive mood errors.
E. which were passed by Parliament to protect British trade with its colonies, made it a requirement that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England --- 1. the possessive pronoun 'its' refers to British trade as though the trade has colonies. 2. the 'it' has no referent.

Hi - i'm not quite following why 'which' makes this incorrect. Do you mind trying to give a dummies version for why it's wrong? as a native speaker is sounds fine to me :P

Hi ankurgupta.

If you think "its" refers to Britain's trade, "its" will also refer to "British trade" in E? => how comes E is better than D?

Thats what ... i think that no answer is correct, i am not supporting E also ... just that i find E better than D

But your think or what you do feel about a question could not be true for the GMAT.

E really goes so far from the truth

Quote:
E. which were passed by Parliament to protect British trade with its colonies, made it a requirement that all trade between England and its colonies be carried on British ships, that all imports to the colonies come from England

which were passed by Parliament: is wordy, is quite clear even not considering at all the rest of the phrase

made it: it in my logic refers to the act that has no sense because tha act by itself do nothing. The act is an expression of the parliament's will, then this will is exteriorized in an act that does something in turns.......so E is incorrect though is parallel with usage of THAT

Moreover, which is wrong because which Parliament passed seems that someone other entity says to the Parliament to pass something not the parliament itself wants to pass the act. The Parliament is the vertex of a democracy so nothing is above the parliament. So the other choices have no much sense

Hope this helps you
