imo option A is correct answer

here for preventing vs to prevent split , for preventing is wrong so c and d are out,
e uses being in wrong context, so remaining A and B
in b usage of they have been at the end does not justify the ellipsis, so its wrong

hence option A is correct

Original sentence:
The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; the natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do.

Eliminate (D) and (E), as the word "naturally built fences of myrrh trees" is nonsensical. The fences were naturally built and, thus, could not be intentionally designed at the same time.

The sentence in each choice (A), (B), and (C) uses different form of tenses. The sentence "Natural fences have been built .., (have been) designed... and they have been (preventing attacks)" in (B) conveys awfully-confusing timelines. Sentence (C) lacks clarity too. Adding a subject "they" before the verb "have" makes the sentence much clearer.

The best answer is (A). The sentence is grammatically correct and unambiguously conveys the intended timelines and meaning.

I am not 100% certain on this one. But from the first clause, it can be inferred that the Maasai have adopted the Living wall project and this implies that this is practice is ongoing. Hence the tone of the remaining sentence has to reflect a continuous process. Choice E is the option that is grammatically correct and also reflects an ongoing action to prevent attacks by predators on the livestocks of the Massai.

The first split we can start with shall be the verb "have been ....". Since the non-underlined portion has "have adopted", it makes sense to use past perfect tense in the underlined portion as well as there is not any major chronological shift.
Hence, eliminate C and E.
Option D uses "Naturally built" which essentially means the fences were built by nature. Eliminate it.
Option B has "they have been" which is not how we say that something fulfills its purpose. Simple tense is preferred.
Hence IMO Option A.

Some months ago when I was reading the last chapter of MGMAT SC guide I came across the following sentence:

Our cars were designed to inspire envy, and they DO. (DO = they DO inspire envy)

Since then I have been waiting for the moment I can apply this knowledge into practice

When we say they DO inspire we can omit inspire and say they DO, but inspire is still meant. Note that the exact verb form missing after the helping verb should be present elsewhere in the sentence. However, the following is wrong:

Our cars were designed to inspire envy, and they WERE. (WERE = they WERE inspire envy)

Saying they WERE inspire is grammatically incorrect. For they WERE to work, the form inspiring would need to be present in the sentence.

Similarly, when we say:

...natural fences have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they DO...

we mean they (fences) DO prevent the attacks. For the above reason have been and have don’t work.

Additionally, we normally say designed for smth or designed to do smth.

Hence A

The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; the natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do.

Mistakes are bolded like this "mistake"

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do
B. natural fences "have been built of myrrh trees", designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and "have"
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and "it is"
E. "naturally built fences" of myrrh trees "are being" designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

though i am somewhat unsure of the question but will try to solve as i would do in actual gmat so go by my strategies

The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; the natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do.

A 5 seconds scan
splits
1)placement of myrrh trees
2) have been vs are
3) to prevent vs for preventing

considering its a gmat question for+ ing to show intent is wrong so C and D eliminated
now scan A,B and E

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
: ,designed modifier refers to the trees which is absurd

C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have

D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed [color=#ff0000]for preventing the attacks, and it is
[/color]
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do :are being designed so it means process is still in progress and is not the meaning

B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
we discard this option as it it not mentioned who designed the fences and what they have done we discard this option
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have
This also gives an incomplete idea
D. This gives us an idea that the fences were naturally built. In addition to this the usage of "it" is incorrect.
E. Same as D

So IMO the answer should be A

BCD can be eliminated .... in B they have been would refer to have been built.. C and have does not make sense, same in D

B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is

between A and E, in E it says the fences are built and are currently being designed

E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

So A is the Answer

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; the natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do.

Split - in the end
and they do is the most appropriate of all the choices. Although there are better ways to frame the statement. the best among these is to use they do in the end for the fences.

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do
B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do
//are being shows that they are to still design the fences

IMO A.

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do --> Correct.
B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been --> they have been is out of place. Incorrect.
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have -->For preventing..should be "to prevent". Incorrect
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is. --> For preventing..should be "to prevent". Incorrect
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do --> Are being designed? They are already implemented. Incorret.

Grammar: what comes after the semi-colon must be an independent clause (subject+verb) that is in some way related to the previous clause (ie. if you were talking about your cat, then what comes after the semi-colon, must be related to your cat!).

Meaning: a group has adopted a wall to save their livestock from predators, then it gives details about the wall and what it does.

(B) "fences have been built", implies the fences were built in the past, but we intend to say the fences were designed in the past; "trees, designed…" past participle is mod the trees, should refer to the fences, unintended; also, "and they have been" wrong tense and a verb, such as preventing, is missing.
(C) "designed for preventing", they were designed with the intent "to prevent" the attacks, thus we need "to prevent" rather than "for preventing"; also, "and have" what? missing verb.
(D) "designed for preventing", unintended; also, "fences [plural]… trees [plural]" vs. "it [singular]" sva error.
(E) "are being designed…and they do" if the fences are still being designed, how could they have prevented the attacks? tense and unintended.

Answer (A): "the group adopted the wall… fences have been designed to prevent… and they do [prevent the attacks: why? because the group has already adopted them!]"

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do- - modifier built of myrrh trees is a verb ed modifier & correctly modifying the noun natural fences, the verb the have been designed and they do are parallel and denote the correct tense Let's keep this
B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been- As per this choice, myrrh trees are designed to prevent the attacks and not the fences.
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have- there is so subject to the verb have after and
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is- it in the second should refer back to fences but that's incorrect as the noun fences is a plural subject and must require a plural pronoun.
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do- the verb are being designed is in present continuous tense and is not parallel to the verb the do. as per this sentence, the fences are right now being designed and they do protect. which is illogical

Hence A is the correct answer

I am not very fan of Option A, but other options are definitely wrong.
Quote:
A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

Quote:
B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been

There are 2 things to notice. Original sentence is in simple present tense but this option is in present perfect and it changes the meaning. Secondly, designed to prevent the attacks should modify "Natural fences".
Quote:
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks, and have

", and have" is wrong and incomplete.
Quote:
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is

"it" in the second clause should refer to "Naturally Built Fences". Subject Verb error.
Quote:
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do

"Being" implies the process of design in underway. If so, it can not prevent the attacks in the same time frame.

The the in the underline part MUST be replaced with "their", and this "their" should be kept out of the underlined part (specially for this case).
Also, the underlined part should not include the full-stop (.).
The most important thing for this SC:
It seems that the correct choice is A. If the official answer is A, then it will be considered as faulty construction. Here you go for the reason-->
"have been designed to prevent" has been used as present perfect tense (with passive voice). So. we have to use present continuous tense in the bold part of choice A (considering that choice A is the legit one). As do can't cover are preventing (continuous tense), we have to replace do with are preventing.
Finally, the correct sentence would be as follows:
The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; their natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they are preventing.
^^ This one is the same as:
The African Maasai have adopted the Living Wall project in their bid to save their livestock from attacks by predators; their (The African Maasai) natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they (natural fences) are preventing.
Hi RonPurewal, MartyTargetTestPrep, jennpt, AjiteshArun, ccooley, DmitryFarber, VeritasKarishma, GMATNinja, egmat, generis
It'll be better for members if you help selecting the correct choice.
Thank you__

Hi bb
This one is the question made by egmat for Game of Timers where there is a severe errors, I feel. I think, egmat should demystify their official answer (A) on the basis of my query. So, could you mention egmat to give their feedback, please? Your help will be appreciated

Here is the same version of the official answer (A).

The members of egmat have created some 700 level SC questions to encourage GMAT aspirants; the 700 level SC questions have been designed to test the caliber of GMAT aspirants, and they (the 700 level SC questions) do (test).

^^ The red part is the generalities of "the 700 level SC questions", but we don't need something what those "the 700 level SC questions" do in everyday life; we need continuous action of that "the 700 level SC questions". So, using do (test) does not make sense at all-we've to use are testing in stead of do (test). For this specific reason, it seems that the next version perfectly makes sense.

The members of egmat have created some 700 level SC questions to encourage GMAT aspirants; the 700 level SC questions have been designed to test the caliber of GMAT aspirants, and they are testing.

Regards,

Here is my POE:

A. the pronoun THEY at the last part is ambiguous, but not necessarily wrong, keep this answer and look if there are better choices.
B. the “They have been” at the end sounds really strange, but I was told not to eliminate just because it sounds weird. Keep this choice.
C. Again, the “and have” at the end sounds strange, I’m not sure if this is wrong, but don’t eliminate just yet.
D/E: “Naturally built” changes the meaning of the sentence, eliminate.

Going back to ABC:

C: the “for preventing” seems like the wrong idiom, “to prevent” is better, eliminate C.
B. The fences were already built, so I don’t understand the need for present pefect “have been built”.

My answer is A just because it feels like the lesser of two evils with B.

IMO A

A. natural fences built of myrrh trees have been designed to prevent the attacks, and they do
Correct choice as it clearly conveys the meaning of the sentence that the fences are built from myrrh trees to prevent the attacks and the fences do prevent the attacks.
B. natural fences have been built of myrrh trees, designed to prevent the attacks, and they have been
The meaning is not clear if the fences can be made from any other tree but now are made specifically of the myrrh tree and this does not make correct sense.
C. natural fences built of myrrh trees are designed for preventing the attacks and have
This sentence also adds ambiguity in the meaning because of the 'and have' because what is the have pointing to is it the fences or the people who have implemented the design.
D. naturally built fences of myrrh trees have been designed for preventing the attacks, and it is
The 'and it is' is wrong because it refers to the fences and fences is plural and 'it' is singular.
E. naturally built fences of myrrh trees are being designed to prevent the attacks, and they do
the fences are being designed and they do? this is ambiguous because we are not clear about the action 'do' what do they do means, also being is not very favored and for this reason, it is not correct.

Also, the underlined part should not include the full-stop (.).

While "the" in "the natural fences" may not be ideal because the sentence never defines which fences "the ... fences" are, it's basically acceptable.
