Hey gmatFalcon :)

i am happy to spark debates :) let me try to explain :)

The amount of annual precipitation received in the Amazon rain forest dropped to a new low this year and prompted fears that both the forests and the wildlife in the area would suffer as a result.

A) year and prompted --- "prompted" refers to what ? i think its it is a wrong modifier that changes only a preceding noun
B) year, prompting - comma+present participle is modifier that changes the preceding clause correctly
c) year, and it prompted - "it" is really ambiguous - what does refer to - this year, amount of rain, forest ? :)
d) year, which prompted - again the same reason as in C
e) year; it prompted - "it" is really ambiguous
