A: usage of compared with is wrong.Compared with is used when we are comparing different things of same type. For example you can compare Skipping and running with jogging. All are different forms of the same type that is an Exercise.

B: from that is a clearer form of comparison.

Hence B is a clear winner.

Thank you.

B doesnt looks gud when it says:

'would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72 ' which implies that the prices would decrease either by four-tenths of one percent or about $ 72. The original question meant like they were the same amount.

Pls clarify.

Hi Experts,

Could anyone look into the following question and explain the rules applied:

Q: 50. The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

A. The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.
B. The automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year.
C. The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year’s models price, or about $72, below this year’s comparably equipped cars and trucks.
D. Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent.
E. Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Specifically why E is not correct?

Thanks in advance.

IMHO , B is the answ.

E is bad ,because we need to compare prices of next year with this year. E compares God knows what :) just look at the words- contracted with cars...., the automobile company announced. cars with automobile company!? announced?!

Compared with Comparably... is unnecessary.

B is clear!

E. Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year’s models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

Answer: B
A - 'amounting' is wrong.
C - altered meaning. original sentence is concerned with 'average price' and not 'price'.
D - Idiom should be 'Compared with' (As Amit2k9 says, "Compared with is used when we are comparing different things of same type.")
E - Incorrect comparison. Over here, the sentence is comparing average price (next year) with cars and trucks (this year).

Tough one - I selected A
Thanks guys for the explanation
A is incorrect for 2 reasons
1. "Amounting to about 72%" is awkward
2. "comparably equipped" - irrelevant

Before I go to explanation, I just want to remind that these types of questions used to be very common in SC. Not sure whether it is now the same or not.

You can immediately rule out D and E, because they compare or contrast cars or car models to company, which is always nonsense in GMAT. In GMAT authors usually prefer to compare apples to apples but not to bananas or oranges. These type of errors used to be very common in GMAT SC.

C is out because sentence does not make sense. It says price or $72 is below cars or trucks...

A is wrong because it is comparing price to cars and trucks... Clearly meaning issue.

So B is left.

Hope it helps...

a) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease four-tenths of one percent, amounting to about $72, as compared with comparably equipped cars and trucks this year.

b) The automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease four-tenths of one percent, or about $72, from that of comparably equipped models this year. (Correct, even though from X to Y has not been used correctly here.Obtained after doing POE)

c)The automobile company announced that there would be a decrease of four-tenths of one percent in next year's models' average price, or about $72, below this year's comparably equipped cars and trucks. (wrong comparision)

d)Compared to comparably equipped models this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's cars and trucks would decrease about $72, less by four-tenths of one percent. (correct idiom, but wrong comaparsion)

e) Contrasted with comparably equipped cars and trucks of this year, the automobile company announced that the average price of next year's models would decrease about $72, or four-tenths of one percent.

As/WHEN contrasted with/to is unidiomatic. Similarly, As/WHEN compared with/to is also wrong. Correct idiom is Compared with/to and Contrasted with/to.
