We all know the M7 conduct background checks and these days even schools in the top 50 are doing it (Simon, I've heard) so I wanted to know how many of us international students have had their backgrounds checked out?

How many of your reccommenders have been called and asked to give your salary?

How many HR departments have been asked questions which ended up putting you in hot water (or not)?

I ask because I'm facing both of the above quandaries. I will absolutely not disclose to my work that I'm thinking of doing my MBA until I really have to (three weeks before I go) and my salary probably won't be given out easily. Chances are I will end up in hot water before this is over.

Anyway, please share your experiences. Tell us which schools and when?
(As you can see I'm not really applying to any of the M7, far from it)

And do international students really checked out? They probably end up using something like hireright
Also do you think they do a credit check for non-Us countries?

I've read quiet a few offers get rescinded because of background checks. Specially at m7 schools.

In my case, I'm paid by a head-hunter firm, not the actual firm I work at, so HR will definitely not have my salaries and maybe not even many records, since they never asked to meet with me, not once.

I suppose its very early in the process (for me anyway) to freak out about it, but there you go.

Congrats on Tuck btw, you had quiet an uphill battle there. As far as I know, all the schools in your list definitely conduct background checks, except, OWEN. Got no idea about them.


Ok - I stand corrected re rescinding offers. And thanks so much on your wishes for Tuck - it was a battle, but the end result was very satisfying :)

I'm also international and interested in information about background check.

I'm coming from banking background and it was extremely hard for me to make my current supervisor to send a recommendation from his working mail, as an issue of bank policy came straight up ( eventually he did).

So i'm wondering what would be my experience with ReVera/Kroll if my employment information wont be given easily...

Folks, let's be reasonable. No reasonable person at any reasonable school will recall your offer because of some unreasonable reasons :) :)

You've got an offer of your life from Harvard and its recalled because of someone answering a verification call is in a bad mood today? Come on, in some companies persons answering the phone do not even speak English, so what?!

I guess, everyone knows that some firms do not disclose information to third parties. You know this, verification agencies know this and schools know this.
