The Bakers football team has been struggling for form all through the past two years in which it has not even managed to reach the semi-finals of any major football tournament. To arrest this decline, the team management has now decided to reappoint its former coach, Charles Keith, who had been sacked two years back.

Which of the following options gives reason to believe that the team management’s strategy may not work?

(A) Several of the team’s most successful players have left the team in the past two years.

(B) The team has been receiving a lot of negative press for its poor performance in the past two years.

(C) Charles Keith had been sacked two years ago by the team management on account of corruption charges, which couldn’t eventually be proved.

(D) The team that Charles Keith has been coaching for the past two years hasn’t been performing really well either.

(E) The continuous string of poor performances has led to a loss of morale among several of the members of the football team.

Team is struggling
Team has not even managed to reach semi-final in last two years.

To stop team's decline, management plans to reaapoint coach who was coach two years ago.

Target: Weaken the plan.

Most successful players of team have left team so team has just average players. So coaching is not gonna help much. IMO OA is A.

Clearly, B, C, and E do not hurt the conclusion.
Let's consider A and D.

(A) Several of the team’s most successful players have left the team in the past two years.
For A, it clearly says that the plan tries to solve the problem in wrong way. Even though the coach is changed, there is no high performing player.

(D) The team that Charles Keith has been coaching for the past two years hasn’t been performing really well either.
To me this choice seems strengthen the conclusion. Although CK's current team does not perform well, we do not know the degree of the performance. If it's a bit better than Baker's, then he might be able to stop the decline of Baker's performance in the next year.

Imo A

It is a tough choice between A and D.
D can be eliminated based on the reasoning that the team, which Charles Keith has been coaching for the past two years, is really bad and he was hired to uplift the team performance. The team may have performed better that itself from previous games but still the performance is considered abysmal.

Presents a good enough reason. Keep it.

(B) The team has been receiving a lot of negative press for its poor performance in the past two years.
Irrelevant. Drop It.

(C) Charles Keith had been sacked two years ago by the team management on account of corruption charges, which couldn’t eventually be proved.
Irrelevant. Drop It.

(D) The team that Charles Keith has been coaching for the past two years hasn’t been performing really well either.
Contender. but Weak.

(E) The continuous string of poor performances has led to a loss of morale among several of the members of the football team.[/quote]
Charles Keith can raise the morale, or he might not. we dont know. Drop it.

Out of A and D. A is the most relevant of the answer choices.Hence A is our answer.

We really do not care about what the coach made with another team or another situation or another completely different context.

We care only WHY the coach in THIS team didn't do well.

Two things: OR the coach is no good after all or for some reason he didn't perform well OR is the team itself (poor quality of the players.

This question is tough and straight at the same time if you need a bit of experience of the outside world.

Regards

It is cause and effect.
Cause: Team lacks the coach/training(That's why management is thinking to appoint the new coach)
Effect: Poor performance
Weaken: Choose alternate cause
Option A and D-
D- Even if Charles's current team is not performing well, it raises the question on Team's ability as well as Charles's ability. Even used as weaken, it will still have question related to Team's ability

A- clearly states the different cause- even if we appoint amazing coach, it will not help team to cross the semi-final in any tournament because it lacks the core strongest players
Ans: A

I disagree with A & feel that D is better.
We are talking about improving the form therefore we can give a benefit of doubt that team still has good players, just they are not able to bring out their form. Hence, may be Charles knows the knack of bringing out the their form. Hence A isn't great.

D says that the current team Charles is coaching isn't performing well. This implies that Charles may not have been a great coach. Hence no use bringing him back. (We should keep in mind that premise nowhere says that Charles was successful with Bakers).
