Re: The banana that contains high level of potassium and other important [#permalink]
shouldn't "which" be preceded by "," ? :)
< asking for "D" >

The OA is B.

This sentence discusses characteristics of “the banana,” a singular subject. Thus, the plural verb “are” is incorrect. Additionally, the phrase “considered to be” is unidiomatic. In standard written English, “considered” is accompanied by neither a preposition nor a verb. Finally, the relative pronoun “that” makes it seem that a particular banana, rather than bananas in general, contains high levels of potassium.

(A) This choice is incorrect as it repeats the original sentence.

(B) CORRECT. This choice correctly uses the singular verb “is” with the singular subject “banana,” and correctly uses “considered” without an accompanying preposition or verb. Additionally, the relative pronoun “which” properly introduces a non-restrictive clause that indicates all bananas, rather than one specific banana, contain high levels of potassium.

(C) The plural verb “contain” is incorrectly paired with the singular subject “banana.” Additionally, “considered to be” is unidiomatic.

(D) The relative pronoun “which” is incorrectly used to introduce a restrictive clause. Also, the sentence seems to indicate that certain bananas, rather than all bananas, contain high levels of potassium.

(E) This choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic “considered to be.”

Hello GMATNinja, generis,

I understand option B is right but I am unable to eliminate option D too. We are not talking about specific Banana here. We are talking about Bananas in general. Could you please advise what is wrong with below sentence.

Bananas which contain high levels of potassium and other important minerals are considered one of nature’s healthiest fruits.

The sentence at the end says fruits. The part with banana is underlined that cannot be used to determine the singularity or plurality of the sentence.
The answer in this case should be (d). Bananas are considered to be one of nature's healthiest fruits.

I agree with you. I too selected options D for the same reason.
Can anyone put some light on that.

Hi ShubhamA, D can be eliminated for the simple reason that there is no comma before which!

Quite a few grammarians consider which as a non-essential modifier, and hence, consider it mandatory that there should be a comma before which (in line with how non-essential modifiers work).

While GMAT has not completely endorsed/refuted this view, GMAT does acknowledge this position of grammarians. In view of this acknowledgement, it is very unlikely that GMAT would have a correct answer that uses which as an essential modifier (in other words, it is very unlikely that GMAT would have a correct answer that does not have a comma before which).

p.s. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses modifier issues of "which", their application and examples in significant detail. If you or someone is interested, PM me your email-id; I can mail the corresponding section.

The banana that contains high level of potassium and other important minerals are considered to be one of nature’s healthiest fruits.

A. The banana that contains high level of potassium and other important minerals are considered to be

B. The banana, which contains high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered

C. The banana, which contain high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered to be

D. Bananas which contain high levels of potassium and other important minerals are considered

E. The banana, which contains high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered to be

The banana is singular so singular verb should be used(is not are)>> option A is wrong.
the banana is singular so singular verb should be used( contains)>> option C is wrong.
Bananas which contain is separating the few banana from complete bananas so changing the meaning>>option D wrong
We normally use only considered no need to say considered to be which is idiomatically incorrect>>option E wrong
Ans is B

The banana that contains high level of potassium and other important minerals are considered to be one of nature’s healthiest fruits.

A. The banana that contains high level of potassium and other important minerals are considered to be

That introduces a restrictive modifier. We should use which instead. It seems to imply that there are certain kind of bananas that have high level of potassium

B. The banana, which contains high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered

C. The banana, which contain high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered to be

Considered to be is idiomatically wrong

D. Bananas which contain high levels of potassium and other important minerals are considered

Rule about which - We can't use which without a comma on GMAT, because which is a non-restrictive modifier, unlike that

E. The banana, which contains high levels of potassium and other important minerals, is considered to be

Considered to be is idiomatically wrong
