Official Explanation

The original sentence contains an idiom error. Both . . . as well as is incorrect; the correct idiom is both X and Y.

In answer choice (B), the idiom both X and Y requires the X and Y elements to be parallel. However, the noun ethnic tensions is not parallel to the conjunction because.

Answer choice (C) fixes the parallelism issue in answer choice (B), but the comparison idiom is incorrect. The proper idiom is either not only X but also Y or not only X but Y.

Answer choice (D) removes the idiom errors in previous answers and contains two verb structures that are properly parallel to each other:

1) started as a result of ethnic tensions and
2) worsened because of economic dislocations.

Answer: D

(E) not because of ethnic tensions but also Incorrect


no change between C & E

both are wrong - ...not only .....but also .... correct form

not ......but..... correct form

Hello. Though i'm not an expert but here's my explanation:-

A) both because of ethnic tensions as well as

this is an idiom error. The correct idiom is both X and Y and not both X as well as Y.

"as well as" here is redundant since "both" is already used.

X & Y are logically parallel in this list and this is purely an idiomatic error.

Doesn't D change the meaning of the prompt? It does not say that the conflict worsened so D would be wrong. The question I flawed IMO.

Hi, "as a result" of is not parallel to "because of". That's why I eliminated this Choice.
Can you please help.

TimJN, there is no such thing as "the meaning of the prompt" in SC. There is nothing special about option A. The meaning should be logical, but it doesn't have to match exactly to what option A is saying. The only holy grail in SC is the non-underlined part, everything else is fair game.
