I just wanted to hand out a bit of info for those who are applying next year on the costs that you need to plan for when you are applying as a US applicant. If any international applicants want to share your knowledge in this thread that would be helpful.

1. Cornell requires two deposits. The first in the amount of $1500 is due in April while the second of between $1500 and $3000 is due in June for a total of $300-$4500 in deposit. Most admits will only see the total of $3000 but those who receive the Park fellowship will see the total of $4500.

2. Background check $100 this is required for all applicants accepting offers and you must use their company.

3. Airfare and hotels for interviews will run you from $500-$1000. Airfare into Ithaca is extremely sensitive to demand and you will find that $400 seats are hard to come by. If you see them at that price grab them because generally they are gone within an hour or two of any announcement of an event.

4. A suit and all accouterments (This may not be something you need) $600.

5. Airfare and hotels for DJ/Scholarship weekend (I would only go to one or the other) $300-1000 each. Scholarship weekend has a travel reimbursement of $200 so hence the low end price being lower than inteviews.

6. The move I don't think I can price this here as everyone's move is going to be different. For a family of four we are looking at $3000 and we are keeping costs low.

7. First two months rent + Security deposit. $1500- $4200

So all in all by the time you are getting your acceptance I would recommend having about $6000 free if you are single or married with no kids and about $10000 available otherwise.
