E.reduced advertising income significantly for both business journals, as well as for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing => gives the impression that reduction was for 2 business journals and for a consumer mag - wrong

i figured when it says 'current' the verb tense shouldn't be the past tense. so C D and E are out. A is unidiomatic so I think B is the answer

A.has significantly reduced advertising income both for business journals as well as general consumer magazines, especially if focusing - Incorrect idiom

B.has significantly reduced advertising income both for business journals and for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing

C.significantly reduced advertising income for both business journals and for general consumer magazines, especially when focused - The context seems to be wrong. It seems to be saying there are two business journals and many general consumer magazines.

D. reduced both business journals’ and general consumer magazines’ advertising income significantly, especially if focused both X and Y - Correct idiom BUT apostrophe usage

E.reduced advertising income significantly for both business journals, as well as for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing - Incorrect idiom. Same mistake as A.

This is how I thought

A, E - Same idiom error.

Left with B, C , D

C - Wrong context

Left with B & D

B is better than D due to apostrophe usage

I thought I saw something like this in the OG or maybe in this forum. Please correct me if i'm wrong but when it says 'current,'
the situation is on-going in the present.
Since C,D,and E start with the verb 'reduced' the choices didn't make much sense so I counted them out.

[both x and y] is the idiom so B is the answer

B maintains the perfect tense uses the correct idiom "Both...and".

I'm going with B in this one.

A and E don't use the correct idiom Both X and Y, so out.

In C the idiom is not parallel "for both business journals and for general consumer magazines"

In D especially if focused modifies the current economic downturn. I'd say that this is not correct.

Although I think option B is correct, What does those refer to? Both business journals and consumer magazines? Also shouldn't be more correct to write "for both business journals and general consumer magazines"?

Polling is for people who want to give an answer without an explanation. The purpose of the forums is to discuss the answers, not to fill up the topics with one-letter responses....

OA is B.

It's clear that "those" is crucial. My only confusion is between "for both" and "both for". Does it make a difference? In any case, B has less words than D, so I guess it wins on that account.

Yeap it makes a difference. in both X and Y, X and Y must be parallel.

For instance,

Both for business journals and for consumer magazines. Correct
for both business journals and consumer magazines. Correct and I'd say better than the previous one.
forth both business journals and for consumer magazines. Incorrect X and Y are not parallel

D. reduced both business journals’ and general consumer magazines’ advertising income significantly, especially if focused
E. reduced advertising income significantly for both business journals, as well as for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing

i am going with B for this question. parallelism is not maintained in A, D and E. when is not correctly used in C. so B wins

He is right. Current indicates it is happening now, so it cannot be in the simple past "reduced" but only in the present perfect, "has reduced". That is one point of elimination. The other would be "especially if" , when it should be "especially those".

Either way, you can eliminate three of them, you are left with two.

There is just one prominent decision point to arrive a correct answer.
Economic downtown has reduced income for journals and magazines ... what kind of journals and magazines ??- "Those" focused on technology.
Option A,C, D are out.

Option B and E remaining.

Now it boils down to idiom. The correct idiom is "both X and Y". Option B uses it correctly.
E is wrong because it uses an incorrect idiom- both X as well as Y. WRONG

Therefore B is the correct answer.

A.has significantly reduced advertising income both for business journals as well as general consumer magazines, especially if focusing
B.has significantly reduced advertising income both for business journals and for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing
C.significantly reduced advertising income for both business journals and for general consumer magazines, especially when focused
D.reduced both business journals’ and general consumer magazines’ advertising income significantly, especially if focused
E.reduced advertising income significantly for both business journals, as well as for general consumer magazines, especially those focusing
