722. The data collected by weather airplanes that fly into the heart of a hurricane are useful mainly for gauging the storm’s structure and strength, not for the speed and the path of their movement.

A) not for the speed and the path of their movement
(B) not for the speed and path of its movement
(C) not the speed and path of its movement
(D) and not the speed and path of their movements
(E) and not for the speed and the path of its movements

I chose E, but its not right, I thought the for is parallel for mainly for. Anyone know why the answer is not E.

Hallo IMO, parallel would be- for gauging the............., not the.........
Besides, in E movements doesn't fit with path. If it is movements then the storm would have many paths

I'll go with C.

The data collected by weather airplanes that fly into the heart of a hurricane are useful mainly for gauging the storm’s structure and strength, not the speed and path of its movement ..

The underlined portions are parallel.

I'll pick B.
The most || structure according to me is B.
' mainly for........., not for..... ' , we need a for after ' not '.

Will go with C. Consider this ………. I work mainly for X not Y.
Not a grammar expert but I think this form is correct.

we need to have a 'for' in the sentence --> C, D is out
A --> 'their' is the wrong pronoun
E --> 'and the' before path is redundant

B is the best choice as it's concise and parallel.

The data collected by weather airplanes that fly into the heart of a hurricane are useful mainly for gauging the storm’s structure and strength, not for the speed and the path of their movement.

"are" refers to what 'data' or 'airplanes'
If it is data then it should be 'is' but if it is airplanes then it should be 'are'

pls correct me if i am wrong.

A) not for the speed and the path of their movement
(B) not for the speed and path of its movement
(C) not the speed and path of its movement
(D) and not the speed and path of their movements
(E) and not for the speed and the path of its movements

(A) storm is singular so their is inappropriate.
(B) not parallel , for is misused here
(C) OK
(D) same as A
(E) movements are plural, so should be speed and path. [/b]

gauging the storm’s structure and strength
not the speed and path of its movement
the parts in bold should be parallel because gauging is measuring the storm's structure and the speed and path
so the sentence after guaging and not should be parallel
