The Daughters of the American Revolution is a proper noun and aname of a society; therefore, the verb ha to be singular’ admits’ .drop B and D. We also need the restricting adverb only because it is an important qualification to be admitted. C gets dropped. In E, the placement of ‘only’ at the end distorts the original intent and hence Only A survives

Subject Verb agreement. (B&D out).

Modifier Only. That leaves A

Here’s my attempt and explanations:

The first split is admits / admit – The Daughters of the American Revolution is A volunteer service organization and there is singular, so I eliminated B and D.

The next ‘split’ is with regard to the placement of ‘only’. I think E is out because the placement of only changes the meaning from admitting exclusively women to descending exclusively from a patriot. Eliminate E.

The difference between A and C is trickier. I think that in A the sentence says that members can only be women, where as C says that members can be anyone but women will be descendants of a patriot.

I therefore choose A. Not that confident though....

the emphasis is on the only only woman who can prove the lineage
and the subject is singular

so A is the answer

Its very difficult to figure out between option A and E.
How can we we eliminate E saying that it only is not supposed to mean that the daughers might have descended from anything other than American Revolution as well.
In my fast glance E made perfect sense. Please help me resolve this!!

thanks

E is wrong because of the problematic meaning it conveys - the option means that the organization admits women who can prove only one thing - lineal descent - and cannot prove any other thing !

Option A means that the organization admits only those women who prove lineal descent and not any other women.

Hence A is better than E.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

a) admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent - Correct

b) admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent - DAR is Singular

c) admits as members women who can prove lineal descent - So, what's the criterion for admission of Men? The omission of "only" changes the meaning, opening up the possibility of admission of Men as well and this is not the intent of original sentence.

d) only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent - DAR is Singular

e) admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only - "Only" is modifying "lineal descent" while it should modify "admits" according to original sentence. In this form, the sentence reads - The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only from a patriot of the American Revolution -> Lineal descent Must be from a (1) patriot and not more.

The Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer service organization, admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution.

The first thing to look for is subject verb agreement between "The Daughter of the American Revolution" and "admits"
Singular subject - Subject Verb

So option B and D are out ..

(A)admits as members only women who can prove lineal descent
"only" correctly modifying "women"
Sentence is correct as it is ...

(B)admit as members only women who can prove lineal descent
Subject Verb Error

(C)admits as members women who can prove lineal descent
Change in meaning as "only" has been removed

(D)only admit as members women who can prove lineal descent
Subject Verb Error

(E)admits as members women who can prove lineal descent only
misplaced adjective "only"

The modifying clause "a volunteer service organization" informs us that the Daughters of the American Revolution is one single entity and therefore needs a singular verb "admits."
