The death penalty involves medical doctors, who are sworn to preserve life, in the act of killing. This issue was much discussed after several states provided for execution by lethal injection. The American Medical Association, responding to this issue, declared that a doctor should not participate in an execution. But it added that a doctor may determine or certify death in any situation. The American Medical Association evaded the ethical problem. It can be argued that when doctors use their stethoscopes to indicate whether the electric chair has done its job, they are assisting the executioner.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is the main conclusion of the argument; the second states a position that the argument seeks to oppose.

B. The first provides evidence that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is that conclusion.

C. The first is a claim that has been used to reach the main conclusion of the argument; the second brings that conclusion into question.

D. The first is a position that the argument accepts; the second is the main conclusion of the argument.

E. The first states a conclusion that the argument reaches; the second calls that conclusion into question.

Hi PearlRay,
The first Bold face is -The American Medical Association evaded the ethical problem.
This is the what the argument concludes, if you re-read the argument, they explain how the American Medical Association responds to this issue, and the bold face is the conclusion they come to.
Now we see only option E is stating that.
Option E states
Quote:
E. The first states a conclusion that the argument reaches; the second calls that conclusion into question.

Or we can go by the second bold face which states -
Quote:
when doctors use their stethoscopes to indicate whether the electric chair has done its job, they are assisting the executioner.

This is questioning the conclusion by saying that doctors are actually assisting the executioner in a way, so if we see E and C have the second bold face correct,
But in C
Quote:
The first is a claim that has been used to reach the main conclusion of the argument; the second brings that conclusion into question.
, the first bold face is incorrect.

Hope I could help,
Let me know if there is anything else.

To get this question correct, one must have an understanding of premise vs. conclusion indicators. Further, one must know the because-therefore test. The two real players in this are (A) and (E), as they are the only two that identify the first potion as the main conclusion. -- Because they are assisting the executioner, therefore the AMA evaded the ethical problem. -- This is the because-therefore test. The therefore is the main conclusion, while the because is a premise/sub-conclusion. (A) is incorrect because we are not trying to oppose the idea. The final portion is saying that a doctor can assist, while the premise is saying that the AMA supports this. So we are not opposed to the issue. In fact, the final portion says the AMA has not evaded and has put its foot down on the issue.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is the main conclusion of the argument; the second states a position that the argument seeks to oppose. -- The first portion is correct. The second half is not. The second portion is not a position that the arguments seeks to oppose.

B. The first provides evidence that has been used to oppose the main conclusion of the argument; the second is that conclusion. -- The first piece is a conclusion, so this is wrong.

C. The first is a claim that has been used to reach the main conclusion of the argument; the second brings that conclusion into question. --Incorrect because of the same reason as (B)

D. The first is a position that the argument accepts; the second is the main conclusion of the argument. -- Incorrect because of the same reason as (B)

E. The first states a conclusion that the argument reaches; the second calls that conclusion into question. -- This is our answer! Both parts are correct!
