Let the two negative numbers be X and Y.
Given, X-Y = 2
As X and Y are both negative, to get positive difference Y should be lesser than X.
X = 10+3Y
10+3Y-Y = 2
2Y = -8
Y = -4
X = 10-12 = -2
X+Y = -6

given
-a-(-b)=2
and
a=10+3b
solve for a & b we get -4 & -2
so -4+(-2) = -6
IMO C

Solution

Given:
• The difference of two negative numbers is 2
• The greater of the two numbers is 10 more than thrice the lesser

To find:
• The sum of the two numbers

Approach and Working Out:
Let us assume that x and y are the two negative numbers, and x > y
• Now, from the given information, we have
o x – y = 2, and ………………. (1)
o x = 3y + 10 ………………………………... (2)

• Solving (1) and (2), we get,
o y + 2 = 3y + 10
o Thus, y = -4, and x = 2 – 4 = -2

• Therefore, x + y = -2 – 4 = -6

Hence, the correct answer is Option C.
