KUDOS please, if you like the post!

(A): Incorrect. (A) improperly swaps "discovery" and "investigation." First, "investigation that" is not an appropriate phrase. Second, the meaning of the sentence is that an investigation occurred due to a discovery. Further, the placement of "normally" is incorrect as it modifies "used" (i.e., that the use is normal) rather than "is" (i.e., that the use is typically).
(B): Incorrect because of the placement of "normally" as in (A).
(C): Correct
(D): Incorrect because of the placement of "investigation," as in (A). Also, (D) lacks a verb following "that" to describe the chemical, simply stating that "the industrial chemical ... and had been added."
(E): Incorrect. (E) changes the meaning of the sentence, suggesting that the discovery concerned the use of the chemical. Further, (E) illogically follows the verb "is" with "had been" with no conjunction: "The industrial chemical melamine is ... had been."
