E) The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5 offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark, which results in the car reaching 125 mph in just 12 seconds

E is incorrect because "which" is trying to modify the clause "offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark", creating a grammatical error. Which can only refer to a noun - 7200 rpm mark- and that would create a meaning error.

Where as A is more concise and clear in meaning.

The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5 offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark; 125 mph is reached in just 12 seconds.

Quote:
A) The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5 offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark; 125 mph is reached in just 12 seconds

This should be the correct choice. CORRECT
Quote:
B) The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5, offering seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark, can reach 125 mph in just 12 seconds

Any phrase between two commas is always non-essential information. If you remove it, still the meaning of the sentence should be conveyed. here if we remove the phrase between two commas, we get the sentence as "the gearbox can reach 125 mph". This is non-sensical. ELIMINATED
Quote:
C) The new BMW M5, with a double-clutch gearbox that offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark, reaching 125 mph in just 12 seconds

Same error as in option B. If we remove the non-essential information between two commas, the sentence becomes "the gearbox reaching 125 mph". This is also non-sensical. ELIMINATED
Quote:
D) The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5 offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark and reaches 125 mph in just 12 seconds

Here the parallel structure makes the sentence convey, "gearbox offers and reaches 125 mph in just 12 seconds". The statement "125 mph is reached in just 12 seconds" is an additional phrase describing gearbox stamina but it is not essential information that needs to be conveyed in a parallel structure. ELIMINATED
Quote:
E) The double-clutch gearbox of the new BMW M5 offers seamless shifts all the way up to the 7200 rpm mark, which results in the car reaching 125 mph in just 12 seconds

Here "which" is referring to 7200 rpm mark. So the meaning is "7200 rpm mark results in car reaching 125 mph". This is also non-sensical. ELIMINATED
