the option E says method of business changed, but it don't say that the methods were profitable. then how E is correct? I feel D should be the correct one.

Last Line states : the sons and daughters of merchants returned home, often to increase significantly the size of the family's enterprise or in other ways, to maximize the profits.

No where in the passage it is given that they maximized their profit. It is just given that " they returned home to maximize the profit".

The passage also states :- they maximize the profit by significantly increasing the size of the family's enterprise or in other ways. This can be presented as BUSINESS METHODS.

Now let's see Why D is incorrect

"Without the influence of junior colleges, many family-run businesses would have been abandoned as unprofitable." .

Can we answer conclude what would happen without the influence of junior colleges ? Whether it is Profitable or unprofitable? We are not provided with any info in the passage to conclude this.

Hence D is eliminated.

E is the Best of All.

(B) is wrong because we really can't infer how popular or widespread these methods were before the war. For all we know these could have been revolutionary techniques or well-kept secrets. In (C), we know junior colleges taught new methods of marketing and finance and stuff like that; we do not know how much management theory was or was not presented. This choice relies on data we aren't given-a sure sign of an incorrect or unwarranted inference. In (D), all we are really told is that many family-run businesses became more profitable.
