I think it is D. Completely parallel because 'The earthquake' is like 'the eruption '.

Others donot do that.

What is OA?

D.

The quake was like the eruption

In most of the other choices the effect is compared to the the eruption. It should be the effect of the quake was like that of the eruption

I edited the question. Yes, OA is D. But isnt it should be " in it's effect" rather than "in it's effects". There is just one effect not multiple effects.

I think, we indeed, are talking about multiple effects of the same quake. Notice, "in each case..." in the sentence after semi-colon.
