STEP 1 - UNDERSTANDING INTENDED MEANING

Let’ break the sentence to derive the intended meaning, identifying the errors along the way:
The German Anthropologist Anna once noted
as an amusing example of income inequality
the elephant that gave rides to children at the zoo
and was earning
annually exactly what she then earned as a chairperson of a National Trust in Munich.

ERRORS:

• The major problem with this sentence can be seen once we remove the prepositional phrase modifier “as an amusing example of income inequality”:
• “Anna noted……the elephant…and was earning.” – this actually makes no senses – Why?
• Since the “and” connects two parallel entities and in this case, the segment after “and” does not have any subject, “Anna” is the subject for the verb “was earning”.
• Putting together we have: “Anna noted...the elephant...and was earning… annually exactly what she then earned” is illogical.
• Are we comparing Anna with some other subject “she”?
• Or are we saying that Anna was earning exactly what Anna then earned?. Neither is logical.
• What is the connection between “the elephant” and “earning annually”?
• Probably the intended meaning is as follows:

INTENDED MEANING:
• The German Anthropologist Anna once noted something as an amusing example of income inequality.
• She noted something about an elephant that was giving rides to children at the zoo .
The fact that this elephant was earning annually exactly what Anna herself then earned as a chairperson of a National Trust in Munich served as an amusing example of income equality.

STEP 2 - ELIMINATE CHOICES WITH IDENTIFIED ERRORS

B. that the elephant that gave rides to children at the zoo was earning
(This is per the intended meaning. Correct Choice.)

C. that the elephant ,giving rides to children at the zoo, had been earning
(The comparison is between the earnings of the elephant and those of Anna at the same time in the past. “Had been earning” does not go with “annually” or per year. Incorrect Choice.)

D. that there was an elephant giving rides to children at the zoo, and it earning
(“Earning” is not a verb here since there is no helping verb, making the construction lack in parallelism. Incorrect Choice.)

E. the elephant giving rides to children at the zoo and that it earned
(The meaning conveyed by this construction is very different. This choice implies that Anna noted the elephant as an example of income inequality. However, the intended meaning is that Anna noted the similarity between the elephant’s income and her own as an example of income inequality.
The use of “that” after “and” also spoils the parallelism of the two segments. Incorrect Choice)
