I think the correct answer is C, because the working verb in the sentence is can, so we use help instead of helps. Also in order to maintain the meaning of the sentence we need to maintain "can", that leave us with a and c, but a uses the plural pronoun they, so is incorrect

Do you think it distorts the meaning of the sentence?
