A, B and C are wrong because they don't make it clear whether the wives had miscarriages or the children (as weird as it sounds)

E has "being", so is out for me. It is awkward as it is and with "being" sounds more awkward.

Choices A, B and C distort the meaning intended - the wives were found to have borne children with heart defects or miscarraige. The three choices convey the meaning that the children were born with heart defects or miscarraige. Choice D and E, correct that. Choice E, is strangely worded and it has the word being in it. In the GMAT one should try to avoid the word "being" as much as possible
