The human growth hormone, made by the pituitary gland, is secreted during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake.

(A) during sleep in higher concentrations than when awake

(B) when sleeping in higher concentrations than waking hours

(C) in higher concentrations during sleeping than waking

(D) in higher concentrations during sleep than during waking hours

(E) in higher concentrations when asleep than when awake

I chose E, but the OA is D. It doesn't make sense to me why the OA is D. D is comparing sleep to hours? the "waking" is an adjective describing "hours", so "hours" is the noun here. I hope there is a typo with this question. what do you guys think?

I also opted for E.

I think D is wordy too, (during redundant usage)

I initially thought "during sleep" sounded better than "when asleep", but decided on E because of the point that tarek99 made.
Waiting on someone to explain this.

Tarek, what's the source of this question? If it's not OG, then I would not loose my sleep over the OA.
