OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

The iconic status of Rosa Park's refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, is proof that at no other time did the civil rights movement succeed in moving public opinion as its inception in the 1950s.

A. its inception in the 1950s

Incorrect.

The relevant part of this sentence is what follows that:

at no other time did the civil rights movement succeed in moving public opinion as _____________.

We can make it more comprehensible by replacing the occasion with [did something happen]:

at no other time [did something happen] as _____________.

In other words:

[something happened] at no other time as _____________.

This is a comparison between what precedes the as and the underlined section. Because the as is preceded by a time expression (at no other time), and because the items compared must be grammatically and logically parallel, the underlined section should also be a time expression.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. It compares the time expression at no other time with the noun phrase its inception.

B. had its inception in the 1950s

Incorrect.

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. It compares the time expression at no other time with the fragment had its inception.

C. at its inception in the 1950s

This answer choice logically compares two different times expressions: at no other time and at its inception.

D. its inception in the 1950s did

Incorrect.

This answer choice repeats the original mistake. It compares the time expression at no other time with the noun phrase its inception.

E. at the time of its inception - the 1950s

Incorrect.

While this answer choice corrects the original mistake, it is stylistically flawed. The phrase the at the time of its inception is redundant. There is an answer choices which conveys this meaning more concisely. Find it!

Answer: Option C

Here, "as" is used as a comparison marker, so, both the elements before and after "as" must be parallel. "at no other time" should be parallel with "at [some other time]"

A. its inception in the 1950s
=> Not parallel, "at" is missing after "as". a specific time is compared with "inception"

B. had its inception in the 1950s
=> Not parallel, a specific time is compared with action. No need of "had".

C. at its inception in the 1950s
=> CORRECT. parallels with "at no other time" ...... as....."at its inception......"

D. its inception in the 1950s did
=> Not parallel, "at" is missing after "as". a specific time is compared with "inception"

E. at the time of its inception - the 1950s
=> Redundant use of time, "inception" suggests the beginning or start.

IMO C.

Problem with original sentence: at no other time...as its inception... sentence not parallel & thus meaning error

B. use of Past perfect is incorrect

C. Corrects the parallelism error and also now conveys the meaning correctly

D. same error as A, no need of "did"

E. too wordy & redundancy due to "at the time" & 1950; time refers to 1950 only
