I agree that A, C, and D are correct.

In Q1 the two contenders are A and E. A is correct because what the first sentence wants to say about the "idea" is that it remained unchallenged until new research challenged it. This corresponds to answer choice A. Answer choice E represents the content of the idea - the reduction of effort, but not the 'reception' of the idea - i.e. what was the attitude to this idea, how was it received by others? That is what the first sentence wants to tell us.

In Q2, C is correct - and the reasoning here closely parallels the reasoning above. The passage is about the challenge to a prevailing idea.

In Q3 - Notice the phrasing of the question - the researchers would agree that "modernizing house technology did NOT". It is easy to pick an incorrect answer choice by not paying attention to that final "NOT".
D is correct because the part of the passage that describes the analysis by Vanek and Cowan stresses that there were two different insights from the analysis. 1 - for particular tasks, the time spent on them was reduced. 2 - overall, in homes of full-time home workers, the total time spent on housework was not reduced. The correct answer choice refers to the latter insight. Answer choice B would only be correct without that final "NOT" in the question stem. C would only be correct in relation to insight no. 2, but not in relation to insight no. 1.

Thank you

Here Women's helpers mean husbands, sons , daughters and servants.

A states that they were encourage to spent more time on the household work with the advent of new devices but no where in the passage this is stated.

Passage clearly states that with the advent of new devices, they spend less effort or time in household work and are busy in promoting a more rigorous standard of household.

Thus, E clearly restates the point , hence the correct answer.

Please explain the highlighted part. Why A scores over E ?

It is not E because see lines 11-12. According to Vanek, reduction of effort did happen. "A" is true because the "idea" was challenged with evidence by the scholars and hence undermined.

I marked (E).

I don't know how you differentiated between 'Content' and 'reception' when neither is mentioned in the question.

Which of the following is TRUE about the 'IDEA'?

(E) is not true as it mentions 'EFFORT' rather than 'TIME SPENT'.

Had it mentioned reduced time spent, it would have been correct.

So (A) scores over (E).

I too mistook EFFORT for TIME SPENT and hence marked (E).

I am still confused as Drudgery means Dull/Menial work according to dict. So the word has tilt towards reduced effort more than time spent. So it is not unusual or incorrect to mention Reduce effort instead of time spent.

The idea is to understand the meaning of the entire option (E). E - highlights the reduction of the effort by using new house hold technologies. This is not correct. (Refer to the specific lines in the passage - Vanek analysed ....workers).

Option A - clearly sums up the "idea" - The "idea" was weakened with the help of data found in time - use surveys.

Hi!
Does it make sense to object that option A says that the surveys, conducted by 'home economics' were used, however passage does not mention that who conducted those surveys. Though i was not comfortable with E for the same reason that E is talking about the efforts and actual idea is about the reduction is work-time, i opted E because i felt A is providing a new information.
