The length of a rectangular field X is 2 kilometers greater than the side of square field Y, and the width of field X is 2 kilometers less than the side of field Y. If y2 is the area of field Y in square kilometers, which of the following gives the area, in square kilometers, of field X?

(A) y^2 – 4
(B) y^2 – 2
(C) y^2
(D) y^2 + 2
(E) y^2 + 4

Answer A

Bunuel, please correct the area of field-it should be y^2 not y2

The length of a rectangular field X is 2 kilometers greater than the side of square field Y, and the width of field X is 2 kilometers less than the side of field Y. If y^2 is the area of field Y in square kilometers, which of the following gives the area, in square kilometers, of field X?

(A) y^2 – 4
(B) y^2 – 2
(C) y^2
(D) y^2 + 2
(E) y^2 + 4

We are given that,
The area of field Y is y^2 square kilometers.
One side of square Y = y kilometers
••
The length of rectangular field X = y +2 kilometer
The width of rectangular field X = y -2 kilometer
The area of rectangular field X = (y +2)(y -2) square kilometers
= (y^2 – 4) square kilometers
