The new biography of Thomas Jefferson contains some startling insights about the man who was the primary author of the Declaration of Independence.

a) about the man who was the primary author

Insights about is incorrect...

b) into the man who was the primary author

Insights into the man ?? Changes the meaning / rather distorts the meaning...

c) into the character of the man who was the primary author

The new biography of Thomas Jefferson........ insights into the man

The man clearly refers to Thomas Jefferson , hence correct.

d) into the character of a man who was the primary author

Charachter of a man - Incorrect

e) about the man who was primarily the author

insights about the man - Incorrect

hence (C) is the best possible answer....

'insight about' is wrong idiom. 'insight into' is the accepted version ; insight into the man is not clearly defining what aspect of
the man is being insighted into. 'Insight into the character' is more forthright. We have to use the definite article 'the 'rather the indefinite 'a", since the person has already been discussed. I am surprised that OG has started asking such exclusive idiom questions again? Curious to know which version of the OG contains this question and what is the OE offered.

I guess the only difference between C and D is an article. In C we have to use "the" because the argument talks about a certain man "who was the author of Declaration".

woah...I narrowed down to A and C.
insight into a man - kind of awkward! B is out
in D - of A man - is not the same as THE man - D is out.
in E - was primarily the author - changes the meaning...
A and C left...
insights into vs insights about - first one is better...
