The new government requires employers to inform an employee of their legal right to holidays and overtime pay.

(A) employers to inform an employee of their - illogical - Pronoun their can refer to employers
(B) employers to inform employees that he has a - Pronoun he is singular but the nouns are plural
(C) employers to inform employees that there is a - Correct
(D) that employers inform an employee of their - illogical - Pronoun their can refer to employers
(E) that employers inform the employees that they have a - Pronoun ambiguity

Can we eliminate option E on pronoun ambiguity ?

Also , if we modify option B as below -
F . employers to inform employee that he has a
G. employers to inform employee that he or she has a
Will F be correct ? In my opinion G is correct .

Also , in option C is the usage of there is correct ?

First, "X require that Y to do something." is wrong. Correct structure is:
"X requires that Y to do something." (Command subjunctive)

"X requires Y to do something" and "X require that Y do something" are equivalent.

Query 1:
Not ambiguity, but wrong reference. By virtue of parallelsim "they" refers to "employers", but "they" should actually refer to "employees".

Query 2:
http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2012 ... rsus-they/

Query 3:
Though gramatically correct, this option does not convey the meaning properly - it is not clear who has the right.

The new government requires employers to inform an employee of their legal right to holidays and overtime pay.

Great Sub-Verb agreement & Pronoun-Number agreement error practice in just one question :
First of all, the trigger word "require" can go with either "to verb..." or "that - subject - verb" form so the split of between "employers" and "that employers" is not useful as both are correct ...

(A) employers to inform an employee of their
This option means that "employers" (as in all the employers in the world) inform to "an employee" (only one employee - lucky guy !!!)
Illogical - Incorrect

(B) employers to inform employees that he has a
Here the error in option A is rectified by a new error is introduced "he" ??? Who is he ??? we need "they" to correct this pronoun number agreement error

(C) employers to inform employees that there is a
Correct ..the sentence avoids the usage of the pronoun he or they altogether ...but rephrasing the last part "that there is a ..."

(D) that employers inform an employee of their
Again same error as option A

(E) that employers inform the employees that they have a
Here there is ambiguity about the antecedent of "they" what does they refer to (employers or employees) ??
Not sure ..Hence Out...

The new government requires employers to inform an employee of their legal right to holidays and overtime pay.

The question tests the usage of "that" and SVA( their, his and have)

Meaning
The new government requires the employers of the company to inform X.
X: The employee of a company has a legal right to holidays and overtime pay

POE:
The entire sentence has one action. The SVA must agree with the corresponding noun

(A) employers to inform an employee of their
Employee: Singular but their is plural.
(B) employers to inform employees that he has a
that modifies the nearby noun employees which must be followed by a plural verb.
the pronoun he has no reference in this sentence.
(C) employers to inform employees that there is a
This option clarifies the above errors and the verb "is" refers to the legal right which is also singular
(D) that employers inform an employee of their
SVA error
(E) that employers inform the employees that they have a
Here the Subject verb agrees with each other. But the meaning and structure of the sentence are wrong.
According to this sentence, that is used twice, meaning, there are two actions
The new government requires
1. that X
2. that Y
But the actual meaning of the sentence has only one action to perform.
This is wrong

Can E be eliminated on the basis of Pronoun ambiguity alone?
The pronoun must always refer back to the "logical" antecedent.

In E, it is very clear that logically "they" is being referred to employees and NOT employers. Why would employers inform employees about the employers' rights to holidays and overtime pay?

On the exam day, I will pick E over C on the grounds that E cannot be eliminated on the basis of pronoun ambiguity alone.

What am I missing here?

Their is incorrect- employee is singular so the pronoun would have to be "his or her"- none of these options use his or her so the next best option is C - concise and grammatically correct

Hi Abhishek,
I had a hard time to choose between C and E. Finally I chose E. I dind not find they as a pronoun ambiguity. I know the subjunctive form is requires that X be Y. Another use of requires is Require someone to do something. Can u kindly help me on your analysis that how u ruled out option E?

Can anyone please explain:- Why "that" is not required in choice C after requires?

Hi sumitgoyal2727

I reckon you have raised this question because you were looking for a command subjunctive construction for the bossy word "require". Is that correct? If that's the case, then "require" can take either the command subjunctive or the infinitive construction. For instance, each of the following two sentences is correct:

1. We require that they tell us the truth . - COMMAND SUBJUNCTIVE
2. We require them to tell us the truth. - INFINITIVE

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

Hi egmat
My doubt is regarding C and D .
1) If in E we have employees instead of they then will it be correct .
My doubt is between what follows "requires" in the original sentence .Is there any difference between requires " employers" and "requires that employers ".

Arvind
