A he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
B he was as committed to preserving the continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
C he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish like he was to the study of the great universal works of English
D he was committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
E he was committed to preserving the continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
Vivek.

probably, it is (a). although, (d) sounds nice as well. in tough conditions of gmat, i'd go with (a)

Re: The New York literary critic Irving Howe embodied the [#permalink]
This is a Comparison problem. In the original sense of the sentence, Howe was as committed to X... as he was to Y...Eliminate C, D, and E. The preservation is more parallel with the study than is preserving with the study. The correct answer is A.

Vivek.
