Re: The New York literary critic Irving Howe embodied the [#permalink]
OA : A

OE:

This is a Comparison problem. In the original sense of the sentence, Howe was as committed to X... as he was to Y...Eliminate C, D, and E. The preservation is more parallel with the study than is preserving with the study. The correct answer is A.

he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English .

how come "commited to the preservation and continued" is correct???? here "and" is creating sentence fragment right???

The New York literary critic Irving Howe embodied the contradictions of many Jewish American intellectuals; he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English .

A he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
B he was as committed to preserving the continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
C he was as committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish like he was to the study of the great universal works of English
D he was committed to the preservation and continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English
E he was committed to preserving the continued use of Yiddish as he was to the study of the great universal works of English

In A.. and creates sentence fragmentation.
preservation and continued --> not parallel

will go for B.
as committed as -- correct idiom

he was ...to preserving the continues use of Yiddish as he was .. to the study of the great universal works of English
.. Looks ||

other comments welcome.

to preserving is in parrallel to studying.

the || sm should be between as X as Y
