The newspaper story accurately recounted the history of the colonial mansion , that it contained thirteen rooms , and that it had a reputation for being a haunted house.

A.
B mansion , that it contained thirteen rooms , and that it had a reputation of being haunted.
C. mansion, that the mansion contained thirteen rooms, and said that
it had a reputation for being haunted
D. mansion, said that it contained thirteen rooms and had a reputation for being a haunted house.
E. mansion, and said that the mansion contained thirteen rooms and had the reputation of being haunted.

Not as tough, but if you time this one, its a fair challenge.

I would go for E.

The subject of the sentence is "newspaper story" and not "mansion". This makes the referent "it" vague. A,B,C and D are out.

You are good..E is correct. i couldnt see it on the timed test.
This just goes to show that being good at SC's is different from
being good at "TIMED" SC's.

Got to take more practice CAT's!

Thanks Martin

Isn't "mension" the subject in this line?!?! The "newspaper story" is the noun. So when you use "said", you will refer to the story and not the mension.

A, B, and C are not parallel and so ruled out.

The newspaper story accurately recounted the history of the colonial mansion, and said that the mansion contained thirteen rooms and had the reputation of being haunted.

The subject is STORY; therefore, verbs should conform to story.

D lost AND between two verbs. E is the best.

The sentence needs the conjunction "and" to link the two clauses.

E... reputation OF... not FOR

Thats the reason I eliminated A,C and D.

Out of B and E, E is better.

Of the lot, I guess 'E' is best. However, I would have prefered a 'reputation for' rather than a 'reputation of'
