IMO A

The nineteenth-century chemist Humphry Davy presented the results of his early
experiments in his “Essay on Heat and Light,” a critique of all chemistry since Robert Boyle as well as a vision of a new chemistry that Davy hoped to found.

D and E are out due to modifier issue. The modifier after "essays on......." has to modify "essays on ...."

Among A, B, and C

A is the most paraller " a critique" and "a vision"

B & C. has "a critique" and "envisioning" not parallel

Can you explain why "critiquing ..." is an inappropriate modifier while "a critique..." is correct?
This sounds right to me but I am fuzzy on the grammatical rule behind it.

I also choose A, "a critique..." ..."a visiion..." modifies the noun "Essay on Heat and Light"."citiquing.." can not modify that noun.

Here's how I thought about it:
In the way the question stem is written, the underlined portion belongs to an appositive which describes the essay. If you wanted to use "critiquing", you would be describing the author instead. If you wanted to go that way, you would need the rest of the sentence to be parallel. The answer choices that start with "critiquing" are not parallel--you would need another verb performed by the author that ends in -ing. (Why choice D is wrong). (I think choice E is wrong because the author wouldn't be critiquing his own vision)

After “Essay on Heat and Light,” we need a modifier which describes the essay/paper/book..whatever it is.

D,E->OUT
in B his has no clear referent.

C- awakward construction -envisioning as well ->OUT

A wins
