Correct Idiomatic usage is Prohibit/Prohibiting X from Verb+ing

None except (C) follows the rule...

The North American bald eagle is no longer threatened with imminent extinction, primarily because prohibitions on hunting and the ban of a poisonous pesticide have led to a rebound in the eagle population.

Further the sentence maintains //ism-

Prohobition of X AND Ban on Y

Hence IMHO (C) is the best answer

A) on account of prohibiting ---- the modifier consists of a phrase and a clause – Unparallel

(B) on account of their prohibiting --- ‘Their’ has no referent’ , in addition to the modifier being unparallel as in A

(C) because prohibitions on --- correct choice. The complex sentence is properly constructed with a main and a subordinate clause

(D) because of prohibiting ---unparallel subordinate clause.

(E) because they prohibit -- ‘they’ has no referent

The issue is the ambiguity of the pronoun "they" - who is they? According the structure of the sentence, this would imply the bald eagle is doing the prohibiting which is clearly wrong. because x and because y or because x and y

This question is based on Idiomatic Usage and Parallelism.

Options A and B lack parallelism. The participle ‘prohibiting’ is not parallel to the noun ‘ban’. Since these are the reasons that the bald eagle is no longer threatened with extinction, the two phrases must be similar in form and structure.
Furthermore, the phrase “on account of” means ‘as the result of’. So, the sentence would read - The North American bald eagle is no longer threatened with imminent extinction, primarily as the result of prohibiting hunting and the ban of a poisonous pesticide have led… The resulting sentence does not require the verb “have led” as the phrase conveys a modifier that provides a reason. The sentence should end at the noun ‘pesticide’. So, Options A and B can be eliminated.

Option D also lacks parallelism. So, Option D can also be eliminated.

Option E also lacks parallelism. Moreover, the pronoun ‘they’ has no appropriate antecedent. So, Option E can be eliminated.

In Option C, the noun ‘prohibitions’ is parallel to the noun ‘ban’.
The construction of this option makes the noun phrase “prohibitions on hunting and the ban of a poisonous pesticide” the subject of the verb “have led”. Therefore, C is the most appropriate option.

wouldn't the correct idiomatic usage be "because of prohibitions on" instead of "because prohibitions on" ?
