Here's how i did it.

Last Year : M/F = X
F = 500 => M = 500X

This year Mnew/Fnew = X/2
Mnew = 2M => 2*500X
Hence Fnew = 2*Mnew/X =2000

Wouldnt questions on gmat be better worded?

I initially considered the proportion of male students to whole to have halved.. If the word proportion were replaced m/f ratio would have made it much easier... :)

I do agree that the way it is worded would make one think harder. Actually I think it is a good thing. Don't you agree?
