Solution:

1. Let x be the number of male students last year . Number of female students last year=500. m/f=x/500
2. The number of male students this year is 2x.
3. To maintain the same ratio of m/f, the number of female students also would have doubled. Thus with only this fact taken into account, we have m/f=2*x/2*500 = 2x/1000.
4. The second fact is that the proportion of male to female halved i.e., m/f = 1/2 (2x/1000)= 2x/2000
5. So x has become 2x and 500 has become 2000.

Therefore the number of female students in the current year is 2000.

Answer = E = 2000
Previous Year
---------------------
Lets say male students = x
Female students = 500
Total = x + 500

Current Year
--------------------
Male students = 2x
Female Students = 500 + y (Say y is the no. of additions of female students this year)
Total = 2x + y + 500

By condition given, 1/2 500/(x+500) = 2x/(2x + y + 500)

Solving the equation, we get female students = 2000.
This can also be done by putting values in male students. Kindly provide any other easy method to solve this

Here's how i did it.

Last Year : M/F = X
F = 500 => M = 500X

This year Mnew/Fnew = X/2
Mnew = 2M => 2*500X
Hence Fnew = 2*Mnew/X =2000

Wouldnt questions on gmat be better worded?

I initially considered the proportion of male students to whole to have halved.. If the word proportion were replaced m/f ratio would have made it much easier... :)

I do agree that the way it is worded would make one think harder. Actually I think it is a good thing. Don't you agree?
