(A) The observation of a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific permits meteorologists to study once-rare storm types more generally and analyzing the impact of such events on isolated island populations in the region.
(B) Through the observation of a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific, once-rare storm types were studied by meteorologists who analyzed the impact of such events on isolated island populations in the region.
(C) When they observed a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific, meteorologists studied once-rare storm types more generally, analyzing the impact of such events on isolated island populations in the region.
(D) Observing a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific, once-rare storm types have been studied by meteorologists, who analyzed the impact of such events on isolated island populations in the region.
(E) Observing a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific, meteorologists have studied once-rare storm types more generally and analyzed the impact of such events on isolated island populations in the region.

In option E Observing a new pattern for classifying precipitation events in the south Pacific correctly modifies meteorologists. Further, studied and analyzed are parallel. Hence E is best choice.

Hi saswata4s,

IMO, they is not wrong in choice "C". "they" very well refers to meteorologists.

the construction is also fine because "when" makes part before the comma the subordinate clause (subject - they, verb- observed) and after the comma we have main clause (subject - meteorologists verb - studied).

this sentence firstly wrong because of the meaning. original sentence says "observation permits meteorologists to study" but this choice says "they observed and after that meteorologists studied". so the causal is taken away in this choice. choice E retains that by saying "observing a pattern.., meteorologists have studied".

Secondly, I also think "had" should have been used in choice C - "When they had observed". because they first observed and then studied. though the choice already conveying wrong meaning, i am not too sure if sequence of events was required to be highlighted with usage of "had".

Can some1 clearly explain why option D is wrong and what principle is being applied here?

Choice D is wrong because of modifier issue.

Who observed the pattern? meteorologist

But choice D says
Observing a pattern..., storm --- can a storm observe something. so makes no sense.

Choice E corrects this issue:
Observing a pattern..., meteorologist
