I would go w/ C. Eliminated A, B and D because flower pattern is singular, so we need to use is, not are. Please correct me if i am wrong

My vote is for C.
This is a great question. A toughie from OG.

Paul,Venks..Let me know if my approach is correct.
There is a semicolon. So just start reading the sentence from the semicolon to spot the error.
Now, my question becomes .

the resulting flow pattern, with crests and troughs that remain stationary although the air that forms them is moving rapidly, are known as "standing waves."

I do not know what it is called but there is some grammar rule that tells us that we can remove the stuff within the commas to see if the sentence makes sense.

So, we are left with.
the resulting flow pattern are known as "standing waves."

Pattern is singular..so we need to use is.

First breakthrough here. Eliminate A,B,D.
Read the remaining two options- C and E.
E does not sound good to me because of ‘They’ .

So, I narrow it down to C.
