A percentage/number passage.
The percentage of global tourists who visit Kokua has increased by five percentage points over the past three years. Since tourism contributes an estimated 7% of Kokua's gross domestic product, this increase is likely to have a positive impact on the economy of Kokua.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument given?

Let's jot down the points.
Premise: % of T increased 5%points in K
Premise: T -> 7% of GDP of K
Conclusion: increase in T +ve impact to economy of K

According to what I have learnt from CR Bible, most people assume increase in percentage means increase in numbers. This is not necessarily true because the total number/group size can be small. (and vice-versa).
Example: From 2001 to 2011, the sale of X increased by less than 10%. Also, sale of Y increased by more than 50% during the period- and so did the increase in the revenue.
This 50% increase gives an impression that the jump has been substantial. It may/may not be true. It is possible that the sale of Y increased from 100 units to 150 units and sale of X increased from from 300 units to 309 units.

General rules for or weaken & strengthen questions.
To weaken or strengthen an argument containing numbers and percentage, look carefully for information about the total amount/s-does the argument make an assumption based on the misconception that I mentioned above?

Since the percentage in the passage seems to be increasing, we don't know whether the actual number of tourists increased or not. You see the fault here that can be strengthened? If the passage mentions that the actual amount of tourists increased as well, then that would strengthen the argument. Also, generally, if the passage is related to number/percentages, the answers must be related to number/percentages. That helps us chop down option A, B and E.

A. People who visit international destinations travel a much greater distance to their destination, on average, currently than such people did three years ago.
INCORRECT. For the above mentioned reason. Also, tourists traveling long distances for at least 3 days is irrelevant to strengthen the point regarding how tourism improves positive impact on the economy of Kokua.

B. People are more likely to visit Kokua's neighbor countries for pleasure now than they were three years ago.
INCORRECT. For the above mentioned reason. Plus out of scope. Unnecessary information that in now way strengthens the argument.

C. The number of people who travel internationally for pleasure has increased slightly over the past three years.
CORRECT. Aahhaa...it mentions the number of people. Okay let's see what's the information following the number of people. The # of people who travel internationally increased then it is highly possible that they must have visited Kokua because of which their tourism % increased in the past 3 years.

D. The percentage of people who choose to revisit an international tourist destination within a year of a given prior visit has increased dramatically in the last two years.
INCORRECT. Yet a contender since it contains 'percentage' in the sentence. Let's examine the rest of the passage. % increase in revisit does not mean that the number of visitors increased. Same as the misconception I mentioned above.

E. Kokua is the leading international tourist destination in its region.
INCORRECT. For the above mentioned reason. And also it doesn't matter if a place is leading tourist destination since it doesn't confirm most people visit that place or not.

+1 kudos if you find my post helpful.

ARGUMENT
[premise] The % of GLOBAL TOURISTS who visit K has increased, and [premise] because tourism contributes a % to the GDP, then [conclusion] K's economy will be impacted positively.

ASSUMPTION
we need to show that the number of GLOBAL TOURISTS hasn't decreased, because if it did, then the argument would fall;
ie. 5% of 100 = 5 and 6% 50 = 3, here the percentages increased but the number of tourists decreased!

Answer (C): number of tourists has increased (not decreased).

There is a increase expected in the tourists visiting Kokua. tourism contributes to 7%, and the expected increase, which will likely have positive impact on the economy of Kokua.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument given?

A. People who visit international destinations travel a much greater distance to their destination, on average, currently than such people did three years ago.
this will not impact economy of KoKua

B. People are more likely to visit Kokua's neighbour countries for pleasure now than they were three years ago.
this is a weakener

C. The number of people who travel internationally for pleasure has increased slightly over the past three years.
this is interesting. if its true, then it does slightly holds the argument higher. If it is not true, then this destroy the basis of the reasoning on which conclusion is made. if people who travelled last 3 years were more on business travel then either tourist travel for pleasure remains same or might have even decreased. and if that is so, tourism will not likely have positive impact on economy. keep the answer

D. The percentage of people who choose to revisit an international tourist destination within a year of a given prior visit has increased dramatically in the last two years.
there are chances that people will visit twice the international tourist destination within a year . assumption is this has to become true for international tourist destination - Kokua. this could be a good contender. however C is still better.

E. Kokua is the leading international tourist destination in its region.
does nothing to the conclusion

C is the answer!

Premise: Global tourist visit Kokua and number of these tourist has increased by 5% over past three year.
Conclusion: Since tourism contributes approx. 7 of Kokua’s GDP, it will have a positive impact on Kokua’s economy.

A. People who visit international destinations travel a much greater distance to their destination, on average, currently than such people did three years ago. – WRONG. Irrelevant as distance travelled to reach destinations is a cost to tourists not a revenue to destination/place.

B. People are more likely to visit Kokua's neighbor countries for pleasure now than they were three years ago. – WRONG. The option weakens the argument above as people visiting Kokua's neighbor countries for pleasure doesn’t add to Kokua’s economy.

C. The number of people who travel internationally for pleasure has increased slightly over the past three years. – WRONG. Though it strengthens the case, we don’t know how much tourism for pleasure contributes to Kokua’s economy.

D. The percentage of people who choose to revisit an international tourist destination within a year of a given prior visit has increased dramatically in the last two years. – CORRECT. A revisit within a year by tourists would certainly add to Kokua’s economy.

E. Kokua is the leading international tourist destination in its region. – WRONG. Neither strengthens nor weakens the case.

Answer (D).

The percentage of global tourists who visit Kokua has increased by five percentage points over the past three years. (P)
Since tourism contributes an estimated 7% of Kokua's gross domestic product (P), this increase is likely to have a positive impact on the economy of Kokua.(C)

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the argument given?

A. People who visit international destinations travel a much greater distance to their destination, on average, currently than such people did three years ago.
This statement does not affect the conclusion. If people travel a much greater distance to their destination, they may increase travel expenses. If may have some impact on the economy of Kokua but the argument does not state anything about travel contributing to economy. INCORRECT

B. People are more likely to visit Kokua's neighbor countries for pleasure now than they were three years ago.
How this is going to impact economy of Kokua? INCORRECT

C. The number of people who travel internationally for pleasure has increased slightly over the past three years.
This is a positive sign for economy of Kokua since global tourists have increase by 5% over the past 3 years. But is this trend going to continue? It may or may not impact the economy in future and may be a temporary increase because of global factors. Somewhat relevant. INCORRECT

D. The percentage of people who choose to revisit an international tourist destination within a year of a given prior visit has increased dramatically in the last two years.
If global tourists continue to visit Kokua in increasing numbers, then it may impact economy of Kokua positively. This statement suggests continuing tourism visits by international tourists. CORRECT.

E. Kokua is the leading international tourist destination in its region.
This is a general statement and is irrelevant to the conclusion. INCORRECT

IMO D

D. The percentage of people who choose to revisit an international tourist destination within a year of a given prior visit has increased dramatically in the last two years.

E. Kokua is the leading international tourist destination in its region.

Official Explanation

Reading the question: The question asks us to strengthen, so we will first attack. There are a number of points we can attack, but reasoning involving percentages tends to be erroneous, so we will focus there. We can filter for "not confusing numbers and percentages" as a strengthener.

Applying the filter: choices (A), (B), and (E) all fail to clarify the distinction between absolute number and percentage, so they fail to pass our filter. Choices (C) and (D) are close to the filter.

Logical proof: we can evaluate choice (C) by the negation test. What if the number of international travelers had not increased over the past three years? What if it had plummeted? That is in fact not accounted for by the prompt, and it would crush the argument. The percentage of the pie who visit Kokua is larger, but the pie is much smaller, so the actual number of visitors to Kokua could have greatly decreased. By ruling out that possibility, the non-negated (C) fixes a major flaw in the argument and is therefore a strengthener. Choice (D), which we liked at first, is still vulnerable to (C), as is the argument as a whole.

The correct answer is (C).
