The pigments used in modern oil paints are different than the ones used in older paints because they are more lightfast and vibrant.

A) "different than" is unidiomatic

B) differ from those used in older paints in that the modern ones are

C) same as A

D) are different from the ones used in older paints on account of being (oh... that "BEING" )

E) differ from the ones used in older paints because they are (paints or pigments?)

to answer shoonya, in this case 'in that' was not the reason for choosing b. in general, i can't think of a sentence where in that would be the only deciding factor. if it was i'd take the option that sounded more like because. of course, i'm no expert

Yes, (B) clarifies the ambiguity of "they" in E. Did anybody notice "in that" is interchangeable with, but not necessarily preferred to, "because?"
